Tips for Furnishing Your Living Room

Jan 21, 2021 | Blog

As a place that allows you to sit back, relax, and spend time with loved ones, your living room should be well-suited to accommodate friends and family alike. That makes having quality furniture vitally important. If you have a new home that needs furnishing, or just want a furniture refresh for your existing living room, you might not know where to begin. How do you choose the right furniture for your home? When it comes to living rooms, several factors come into play when choosing the best furniture for the space.

Plan Out the Living Area

You may already know how you want the layout of the living room to be, but if you don’t, you’ll want to decide that before you bring in any new furniture. Take the size of your space into consideration, and choose pieces of furniture that won’t overwhelm. For example, smaller living rooms might do best with a sofa and chair set, while a larger room might benefit from a big sectional. Decide where shared items such as the television and coffee table should go, and revolve your seating around those. You’ll want the TV somewhere where everyone in the living room can see it, and the coffee table centrally located so all people who are seated have easy access to it. Once you have the layout figured out, then you can move on to furniture selection.

Start with the Basics

The most important pieces of furniture in your living room will be sofa/loveseat/chair or whatever seating arrangement you choose, and the coffee table and side tables. Ideally, you’ll want your pieces from the same set. Example: matching coffee and side tables, matching sofa, loveseat or chair and ottoman. Purchase quality pieces that will not only look timeless, but will also withstand the test of time. Quality furniture such as leather sofas and solid wood tables are expensive, but consider them an investment that will last for many years with proper care.

Consider Your Lifestyle

Many furniture shoppers agonize over the type of material they should purchase. Fabric, leather, or faux-leather? If you have pets or small children in the house, consider a material that is stain-resistant or easy to clean. Leather and faux-leather are easy to take care of, since pet hair won’t stick to it and spills or crumbs are easily wiped away. Fabric furniture looks nice, is friendlier on your wallet, but stains easy (especially with lighter color fabrics) and is harder to keep clear of pet hair, crumbs, dust, and dirt.
